Transcript: "New World Man - We Have Assumed Control - Rush's Career in 10 Albums" - PROG, February 2016

Rush is featured on the cover of the February issue of the UK's PROG magazine. Included are three feature stories including Lee, Lifeson and Peart talking about 2112 as the album turns 40, and Geddy ranks his Top 10 Rush albums. Most important is an interview with Geddy Lee where he talks about the R40 Live Tour, how he felt when it came to an end, and gives his thoughts on the future of Rush. A key thought is this exchange:

Have you broached the subject of a new Rush album? 
No.

But you're saying that you and Alex could do an album together, not as Rush? 
Yeah....It's an option.

I've just transcribed "Music Gear: Guitars of Rush's Alex Lifeson", from the June 30, 1981 issue of Circus magazine.  Published during the Moving Pictures tour, it is an interview where Alex Lifeson discusses his arsenal of guitars from his first ES-335 through his latest, the Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion.

My latest transcript addition is 'Veteran Rock Group Rush Tones Down Touring Style', an interview with Alex Lifeson during the Roll The Bones tour, from the May 22, 1992 issue of the Daily Oklahoman. Lifeson discusses how the band keeps busy during down time on the road, including golf, tennis, cycling, etc., and their food drive which gave fans a chance at front row seats and meeting the band.

Transcript: "Closer To The Heart: A Rush Discography" - Kerrang!, November 1981

Today's transcript addition is "Closer To The Heart: A Rush Discography", an extensive history of Rush's album releases published as the Exit Stage Left tour hit the UK. From the November 1981 issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine, it was written by journalist John Gill, who eagerly took over as Rush's main supporter at Sounds magazine when Geoff Barton jumped ship after Hemispheres (hence labeled "Deaf" Barton in this article). To say that Gill is a fan of the band is an understatement; check out this bold statement, a rarity for the UK press: "Rush didn't simply acknowledge a debt to Zep, they improved on the influence."

Transcript: 'Rush Gains Fans In Hard Times' - Milwaukee Sentinel, February 27, 1981

My latest transcript is 'Rush Gains Fans In Hard Times', an extensive interview with Geddy Lee which appeared in the February 27, 1981 issue of the Milwaukee Sentinel.  As summed up by the title, while other bands were losing fans due to economic choices in the early 80's, Rush were selling more tickets than ever before.  Geddy also discusses mastering the album digitally, and pressing it to virgin vinyl when possible.  Also included in the transcript is the album review "Moving Pictures Keeps Rush Moving".

Transcript: "Rush's Performance Well-Balanced, Precise" - OSU's The Lantern, February 5, 1979

Today's transcript addition was sent in by John Harrison, and is a concert review and short interview with Alex Lifeson that appeared in the Ohio State University newspaper following their performance there on February 1, 1979.  In "Rush's Performance Well-Balanced, Precise" the reviewer comments on Geddy's tasteful use of keyboards which at that time were gradually being introduced into the live show, and remarks "Rush has always presented a fascinating musical contradiction to me - the mystical lyrics seem more appropriate to folk singers, but when set to driving rock and roll beat, the songs emerge as ferocious, yet fun."

Part of UME's reissue campaign, over the past few months we have been treated with three 5.1 surround sound mixes on Blu Ray High Fidelity Pure Audio for Fly By Night, A Farewell to Kings and Signals. Sound & Vision's Mike Mettler reviews these mixes in the December issue, and makes the key observation "These mixes were originally done for DVD-Audio by Richard Chycki and were included one each in 2011's trio of Sector box sets. Rush's Presto was released 26 years ago today! (http://tinyurl.com/osl2lrv). From the December 9th, 1989 issue of Sounds magazine, I've just transcribed "The Magic Circle", an interview with Alex Lifeson given when the album was newly released, where he explains some of the lyrical themes of the album such as those in the songs Superconductor, Anagram, Red Tide, and more.

The Clockwork Angels Tour video and cd were released two years ago today.  I've just transcribed Classic Rock magazine's 'Clockwork Angels Tour Video Review' from the February 2014 issue where they gave it a 9 out of 10 stars, and wrote "unlike followers of other veteran bands, Rush fans aren't just there to hear the old favourites, and the newer songs are the highlights from where we're sitting."

Geddy Lee's My Favorite Headache was released 15 years ago today.  I've just transcribed 'Geddy Lee Defines Himself: Arena Rocker Was In No Rush To Go Solo', published in the Calgary Herald just days before the release of the album. Geddy talks about the differences between his solo album and Rush, and adds how he wanted to tour small venues with the album.

Today's transcript addition is 'Rushing At Their Own Pace', an interview with Neil Peart from the Buffalo News, published the day before their November 13, 1987 show there on the Hold Your Fire tour.   The interview was given two weeks before, the day before the tour kicked off in St. John's, Newfoundland.  Neil recalls the days of endless touring, and his thoughts that the performance suffered because of it.
