Transcript: 'Magnetic Memories: Four Decades in the Studio with Rush' - DRUM!, December 2015

The December issue of DRUM! magazine includes an extensive 7 page feature story written by Neil Peart titled "Magnetic Memories: Four Decades In The Studio With Rush". Transcript: 'Rushing At Their Own Pace' - Buffalo News, November 13, 1987

Today's transcript addition is 'Rushing At Their Own Pace', an interview with Neil Peart from the Buffalo News, published the day before their November 13, 1987 show there on the Hold Your Fire tour.   The interview was given two weeks before, the day before the tour kicked off in St. John's, Newfoundland.  Neil recalls the days of endless touring, and his thoughts that the performance suffered because of it. He also discusses Aimee Mann's contribution to the live show. - Thanks to Heiko Klages for the original clipping!

Transcript: "Power Windows (Review)" - Rock Scene, October 1986

Rush's Power Windows was released 30 years ago today! (http://tinyurl.com/8nr2yz6). It peaked at #10 on the Billboard charts, and was certified Gold on December 18, 1985, and Platinum on January 27, 1986. Here's a newly transcribed "Power Windows (review)" from the October 1986 issue of Rock Scene scene magazine. A raving review, the writer ends with the odd comment that his only complaint is that the lyrics at time get too serious for the average Joe.

Transcript: "Rush Drummer: Causeless Rock Rebels Duping Young Fans" - Cincinnati Enquirer, June 10, 1990

"If your new material isn't the focus of what you're doing and you don't consider it to be the best thing you've ever done, you better just become an oldies act and send yourself to Vegas. The dream is dead."  That comment from Neil Peart, from the June 10, 1990 issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer, is especially apt now that Rush has possibly retired from touring, where there has been hope that Rush might consider performing a residency at Massey Hall, Radio City or elsewhere.   In my latest transcript, "Rush Drummer: Causeless Rock Rebels Duping Young Fans", Neil also remarks on how musicians like Bon Jovi and George Michael pretend to be rebels to sell music, and "That's why there's that line in the song about packaging the image of the rebel".  He also says how his then 12-year old daughter Selena was a big fan of New Kids on the Block, but that their form of pop-music was at least "honest". - Thanks to Heiko Klages for providing the original article!

My next transcript addition, 'Geddy Lee Discusses Feedback, The 30th Anniversary Tour And More!', was first published on FYE.com on July 9, 2004, a week after the release of Feedback. This is an extensive interview with Geddy given by journalist and Rush fan Brad Parmerter, who spoke to Geddy Lee before soundcheck in Mountain View, CA in early July '04 to discuss the EP, the tour, the future, and the importance of good footwear.  Some interesting thoughts are included in this interview, such as the fact that "Second Nature" was considered for the acoustic medley on the R30 tour... - Thanks BP for sending the original article!

Burning For Buddy Vol. I. was released 21 years ago today.  I've just transcribed 'Rich Field Honors Buddy', an interview with Neil Peart regarding the Buddy Rich tribute album project published in the January 20, 1995 issue of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Transcript: 'Older, Wiser And Still Rockin' Rush' - Ottawa Citizen, November 21, 1991

From the Roll The Bones tour, my latest transcript contains a long lost interview with Neil Peart. In 'Older, Wiser And Still Rockin' Rush', from the November 21, 1991 issue of the Ottawa Citizen, Neil states that he likens Rush's early work to "your fridge paintings from Grade 2 that your mom used to hang on the fridge. You grow out of them and you're either embarrassed or a bit nostalgic about them."

Transcript: 'Intelligent Music That Rocks: Rush Chooses Brain Over Wallet' - United Press International, June 8, 1977

All The World's A Stage was released 39 years ago today! It peaked at #40 on the Billboard chart, and was certified Platinum on March 4, 1981.  To mark the occasion I've transcribed 'Intelligent Music That Rocks: Rush Chooses Brain Over Wallet' a UPI syndicated story published June 8, 1977 which ran in all major papers in the US late in the All The World's A Stage tour.  The piece includes a brief interview with Neil Peart, who states "Our music...has to be an honest statement of what we want to hear and what we want to play. Honesty is the keynote, the principle which we try to apply to everything we do - the music, the business, our personal relationships with each other."

Transcript: 'Rush Concludes Cygnus Cycle' - Circus, December 12, 1978

My latest transcript is 'Rush Concludes Cygnus Cycle', a review of Hemispheres from the December 12, 1978 issue of Circus magazine. Unfortunately the reviewer is obviously a critic of objectivism and it colors the entire review, stating that "most people in Rush's home town of Toronto read Rand before they get out of school" an incorrectly implies that Hemispheres' Apollo and Dionysus were inspired by Rand. The review pretty much spirals into the void not long after the silly statement "Cygnus has ominous overtones of superhuman dictatorship". Transcript: "CPI Video Division [Grace Under Pressure Video Details]" - Canadian Musician, May 1985

31 years ago today, Rush filmed their concert at Maple Leaf Gardens, later released as the Grace Under Pressure tour video.  This next transcript, "CPI Video Division", is a short piece about the firm Concert Productions International's move into video from the May 1985 issue of Canadian Musician magazine, and gives details regarding their filming of the Grace Under Pressure tour video.

Transcript: 'Rush Judgement' - Sounds, July 16, 1977

Here is an article which I've wanted to transcribe for some time. 'Rush Judgement: Tired Of The Stress Of The City, The Canadian Power Trio Take To The Wilds Of Wales' is an interview with Neil Peart by Geoff Barton' from the July 16, 1977 issue of the UK's "Sounds" magazine. Neil is interviewed in Wales during the A Farewell to Kings sessions, and discusses the band's history and more. A couple of interesting points include his story of how he conceived "The Fountain of Lamneth", and how he originally lobbied to have All The World's A Stage edited down to fit on a single vinyl record instead of a two record set of the complete concert(!).

Transcript: "'Signals' From Rush" - The Pittsburgh Press, November 21, 1982

Rush's Signals was released 33 years ago today.  To mark the occasion I've transcribed a review of Signals from the November 21, 1982 edition of the Pittsburgh Press. The reviewer notes the trend toward keyboards, and gives his thoughts that the conformist theme of "Subdivisions" is similar to the Monkees' "Pleasant Valley Sunday".

Transcript: 'Rush Burns Intensely On Hold Your Fire' - Toronto Star, September 4, 1987

Rush's "Hold Your Fire" was released 28 years ago today!  It peaked at #13 on the Billboard chart, and was certified Gold two months later.

I've just transcribed a review of the album written by Greg Quill of the Toronto Star. 'Rush Burns Intensely On Hold Your Fire' appeared in the September 4, 1987 issue of Rush's hometown paper, and is a very heartfelt and glowing review, which states "Hold Your Fire is by far the most personal, most likeable album Rush has made...Rush's most completely realized work, a subtly gleaming gem." Hard to argue with that.

Website Scheme Update: "Anthology"

Time for a change, I've updated the website scheme to feature album artwork for the South American Mercury compilation Anthology.

A rare official compilation released in Venezuela, Ecuador and possibly other South American countries in 1984, Anthology featured tracks from the albums 2112 through Signals, and each of those album covers appear in the cover artwork.

Transcript: "Is The Canadian Rush On?" - Music Week, March 4, 1978

Rush's A Farewell To Kings was released 38 years ago today on August 29, 1977.  I've just transcribed a story which remarked on Rush's increased success following the album's release.   "Is The Canadian Rush On?", from the March 4, 1978, issue of the UK's Music Week, also gives some interesting history regarding the creation of Moon Records and the signing with Mercury, and most interesting is this comment from Alex Lifeson from early in 1978: "There are tours planned for the US, Japan and Australia."

Transcript: "Neil Peart Martin Deller Interview" - Canadian Musician, October 1981

My latest transcript addition is from the October 1981 issue of Canadian Musician magazine. The article is self-explanatory as "FM's Martin Deller Talks With Neil Peart Of Rush". The conversation took place in early 1981 and the two Canadian drummers cover a range of topics, including a few comments regarding Rush. - Thanks to Joe Pesch for the original article!

Transcript: "RUSH 'Rush' (Mercury - Import) Review - Melody Maker, March 15, 1975

Rush's debut album featuring the pink and black explosion cover was released 41 years ago today on the Mercury label (August 10, 1974). To mark the event I have transcribed what is perhaps the first RUSH album review ever be published in the UK. Titled "RUSH 'Rush' (Mercury - Import) it is a review of the debut album when it was only available in the UK as an import, from the March 15, 1975 issue of Melody Maker magazine. A very positive review, the writer states it is "a more than promising debut album."  Couldn't agree more.
