Transcript: "Closer To The Heart: A Rush Discography" - Kerrang!, November 1981

Today's transcript addition is "Closer To The Heart: A Rush Discography", an extensive history of Rush's album releases published as the Exit Stage Left tour hit the UK. From the November 1981 issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine, it was written by journalist John Gill, who eagerly took over as Rush's main supporter at Sounds magazine when Geoff Barton jumped ship after Hemispheres (hence labeled "Deaf" Barton in this article). To say that Gill is a fan of the band is an understatement; check out this bold statement, a rarity for the UK press: "Rush didn't simply acknowledge a debt to Zep, they improved on the influence."

My latest transcript is 'Rush Gains Fans In Hard Times', an extensive interview with Geddy Lee which appeared in the February 27, 1981 issue of the Milwaukee Sentinel.  As summed up by the title, while other bands were losing fans due to economic choices in the early 80's, Rush were selling more tickets than ever before.  Geddy also discusses mastering the album digitally, and pressing it to virgin vinyl when possible.  Also included in the transcript is the album review "Moving Pictures Keeps Rush Moving".

Transcript: "Rush's Performance Well-Balanced, Precise" - OSU's The Lantern, February 5, 1979

Today's transcript addition was sent in by John Harrison, and is a concert review and short interview with Alex Lifeson that appeared in the Ohio State University newspaper following their performance there on February 1, 1979.  In "Rush's Performance Well-Balanced, Precise" the reviewer comments on Geddy's tasteful use of keyboards which at that time were gradually being introduced into the live show, and remarks "Rush has always presented a fascinating musical contradiction to me - the mystical lyrics seem more appropriate to folk singers, but when set to driving rock and roll beat, the songs emerge as ferocious, yet fun."

Transcript: 'Fly By Night, A Farewell To Kings & Signals - High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray' - Sound&Vision, December 2015

Part of UME's reissue campaign, over the past few months we have been treated with three 5.1 surround sound mixes on Blu Ray High Fidelity Pure Audio for Fly By Night, A Farewell to Kings and Signals. Sound & Vision's Mike Mettler reviews these mixes in the December issue, and makes the key observation "These mixes were originally done for DVD-Audio by Richard Chycki and were included one each in 2011's trio of Sector box sets. In direct track-by-track A/B comparison, it's quite apparent the Blu-ray versions have much more impact and presence overall." - Thanks to RushFanForever for providing the original article.

Here's a newly transcribed "Power Windows (review)" from the October 1986 issue of Rock Scene scene magazine. A raving review, the writer ends with the odd comment that his only complaint is that the lyrics at time get too serious for the average Joe.

Transcript: "Rush Drummer: Causeless Rock Rebels Duping Young Fans" - Cincinnati Enquirer, June 10, 1990

"If your new material isn't the focus of what you're doing and you don't consider it to be the best thing you've ever done, you better just become an oldies act and send yourself to Vegas. The dream is dead."  That comment from Neil Peart, from the June 10, 1990 issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer, is especially apt now that Rush has possibly retired from touring, where there has been hope that Rush might consider performing a residency at Massey Hall, Radio City or elsewhere.   In my latest transcript, "Rush Drummer: Causeless Rock Rebels Duping Young Fans", Neil also remarks on how musicians like Bon Jovi and George Michael pretend to be rebels to sell music, and "That's why there's that line in the song about packaging the image of the rebel".  He also says how his then 12-year old daughter Selena was a big fan of New Kids on the Block, but that their form of pop-music was at least "honest". - Thanks to Heiko Klages for providing the original article!

My next transcript addition, 'Geddy Lee Discusses Feedback, The 30th Anniversary Tour And More!', was first published on FYE.com on July 9, 2004, a week after the release of Feedback. This is an extensive interview with Geddy given by journalist and Rush fan Brad Parmerter, who spoke to Geddy Lee before soundcheck in Mountain View, CA in early July '04 to discuss the EP, the tour, the future, and the importance of good footwear.  Some interesting thoughts are included in this interview, such as the fact that "Second Nature" was considered for the acoustic medley on the R30 tour... - Thanks BP for sending the original article!

From the Roll The Bones tour, my latest transcript contains a long lost interview with Neil Peart. In 'Older, Wiser And Still Rockin' Rush', from the November 21, 1991 issue of the Ottawa Citizen, Neil states that he likens Rush's early work to "your fridge paintings from Grade 2 that your mom used to hang on the fridge. You grow out of them and you're either embarrassed or a bit nostalgic about them."

All The World's A Stage was released 39 years ago today! It peaked at #40 on the Billboard chart, and was certified Platinum on March 4, 1981.  To mark the occasion I've transcribed 'Intelligent Music That Rocks: Rush Chooses Brain Over Wallet' a UPI syndicated story published June 8, 1977 which ran in all major papers in the US late in the All The World's A Stage tour.  The piece includes a brief interview with Neil Peart, who states "Our music...has to be an honest statement of what we want to hear and what we want to play. Honesty is the keynote, the principle which we try to apply to everything we do - the music, the business, our personal relationships with each other."

Transcript: 'Rush Concludes Cygnus Cycle' - Circus, December 12, 1978

My latest transcript is 'Rush Concludes Cygnus Cycle', a review of Hemispheres from the December 12, 1978 issue of Circus magazine. Unfortunately the reviewer is obviously a critic of objectivism and it colors the entire review, stating that "most people in Rush's home town of Toronto read Rand before they get out of school" an incorrectly implies that Hemispheres' Apollo and Dionysus were inspired by Rand. The review pretty much spirals into the void not long after the silly statement "Cygnus has ominous overtones of superhuman dictatorship". Uh, yeah...whatever. - Thanks to Greg Nosek for sending the original article!

Transcript: 'Rush Judgement' - Sounds, July 16, 1977

Here is an article which I've wanted to transcribe for some time. 'Rush Judgement: Tired Of The Stress Of The City, The Canadian Power Trio Take To The Wilds Of Wales' is an interview with Neil Peart by Geoff Barton' from the July 16, 1977 issue of the UK's "Sounds" magazine. Neil is interviewed in Wales during the A Farewell to Kings sessions, and discusses the band's history and more. A couple of interesting points include his story of how he conceived "The Fountain of Lamneth", and how he originally lobbied to have All The World's A Stage edited down to fit on a single vinyl record instead of a two record set of the complete concert(!).

Rush's "Hold Your Fire" was released 28 years ago today!  It peaked at #13 on the Billboard chart, and was certified Gold two months later.

I've just transcribed a review of the album written by Greg Quill of the Toronto Star. 'Rush Burns Intensely On Hold Your Fire' appeared in the September 4, 1987 issue of Rush's hometown paper, and is a very heartfelt and glowing review, which states "Hold Your Fire is by far the most personal, most likeable album Rush has made...Rush's most completely realized work, a subtly gleaming gem." Hard to argue with that.

Transcript: "Neil Peart Of Rush" - Feedback! Rock Interviews, July 1983

Here is a VERY revealing interview with Neil Peart from the Signals tour, which appeared in the premiere (July 1983) issue of Ireland's Feedback! Rock Interviews magazine. Neil appeared on the cover, and is in prime form in this interview where he explains how catering to fans who want them to return to their older style of music would be tantamount to being "just another formula top-forty band".  He also explains why they don't play just their hits on tour, why they stopped playing the smaller towns in the UK, and also sheds light on the deeper meanings of many of his songs. It really is a must read interview!

Writer Greg Quill has shown he is a Rush fan in other press reviews, but in this one, he is very down on the overall direction, production and editing of the concert film, which he sums up with "the pity is that in the hands of a director with some understanding of the depth and breadth of Rush, this video could have been so much more."

This week sees the 31st anniversary of the release of Grace Under Pressure, and to mark the event I've transcribed "The Rush Dilemma!" from the July 1984 issue of RockLine! magazine.  It asks a question which long time fans already know the answer to, and that is if Rush's "sound" circa-Grace Under Pressure was crafted for commercial success, or if they were "just going wherever the music takes them?" The article also reminds us of the fact that Rush was an early pioneer of the "Laserium" shows.

A knowledgeable review, the writer justly places the album in the annals of Rush: "...a combination of their new instrumental order and smooth, edgeless production makes the album Rush's most accessible and salable, a somewhat saddening departure for older loyalists and a point of entry for new converts yet to discover their earlier work." - Thanks to John Harrison for sending the original article!

Transcript: 'Rush Happily Dwarfed By Its Own Technology' - Toronto Star, March 8, 1988

27 years ago today, Rush performed the first of two nights at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens on the Hold Your Fire tour.  My latest transcript is a less than positive hometown concert review from the March 8, 1988 edition of the Toronto Star; in 'Rush Happily Dwarfed By Its Own Technology', critic Craig MacInnis obviously doesn't get it, and makes no bones that he is not a fan of Rush who he says is "full of itself". - Thanks to Heiko Klages for providing the original news clipping.

Happy Friday.  My latest transcript addition is another transcript of the syndicated radio show, "Innerview With Jim Ladd"; this time it was Geddy Lee who talked with Jim, while Rush was in Los Angeles during the Signals tour in February 1983. These Innerviews have lots of great stuff included; in this one Geddy tells us who was the inspiration for the song "Digital Man".

Transcript: 'Rush's Music Is Never Dry' - Stanford Daily, February 16, 1989

Published 26 years ago this week, my latest transcript is 'Rush's Music Is Never Dry' from the February 16, 1989 issue of the Stanford Daily. A review of A Show of Hands, the article includes a killer drawing of the band live, and the writer is obviously a fan, who points out with tongue in cheek "Lifeson and Lee recruited Neil Peart, who would soon become the world's greatest (no, none of this 'one of the greatest...' pussyfooting around, THE GREATEST) drummer. Yes, even better than Sheila E." - Thanks to John Harrison for sending the original article!

Transcript: "Rush To Glory: Pleasing Most Of The People All Of The Time" - Hit Parader, April 1981

Moving Pictures was released on this day in 1981, and to celebrate I've transcribed "Rush To Glory: Pleasing Most Of The People All Of The Time" from the April, 1981 issue of Hit Parader. All three members of Rush are interviewed, beginning with an annoyed Alex Lifeson, who was upset as they were on tour supporting the multi-platinum Moving Pictures, yet "...I read somewhere about how Rush is too complex for their own good, or how pompous we are, I'll tell you, stuff like that can get to you after a while. We're in the business of pleasing people with our music, and it can get awful annoying when some people refuse to accept what you're trying to do." Also, Neil describes how the band shrugged off pressure to release a live album followup to Permanent Waves.

Transcript: "Exit...Stage Left (album review)" - Circus, February 28, 1982

With a new tour upon us, many of us are also looking forward to the obligatory live album (coming this fall or next spring, perhaps?).  I've just transcribed Circus magazine's review of the Exit Stage Left album from their February 28, 1982 issue, the live album which many Rush fans at one time deemed to be their best. The review is written by John Swenson, who would later write the Chronicles linernotes essay; he concludes "If you haven't listened much to the group, Exit is a perfect place to start. If you like Rush already this is the record you've been waiting for."

Transcript: "Bookends: Rush's Neil Peart And Geddy Lee" - Musician, August 1984

My latest transcript is from the August 1984 issue of Musician magazine - their Bass & Drum special. The issue included the interview "Bookends: Rush's Neil Peart And Geddy Lee", and not surprisingly, when Neil talks about the rhythm section, he adds "I don't limit it just to myself and Geddy. Because often when he's playing keyboards I have to interact together with our guitarist, Alex Lifeson, in the way that a rhythm section would. That's something that we explored a lot on Signals, our previous album."

Transcript: "Closer To The Heart: Alex Lifeson...With His First Independent Journey, Victor!" - Access, January/February 1996

Alex Lifeson's solo project Victor was released 19 years ago today, and to commemorate the event I have transcribed a rare Victor feature story from the January/February 1996 issue of Access - The Rock Radio Magazine.  In "Closer To The Heart: Alex Lifeson Dances Dangerously Close To The Senses With His First Independent Journey, Victor!", Alex talks about the reasons he created Victor, the musicians, details on the instrumentals, and how after creating Victor when he reunited with Geddy and Neil for the Test For Echo sessions, "I wasn't sure during our first week that I wanted to continue. I was still disillusioned by what I just accomplished with my record and I didn't know if I wanted to get back into the same old thing that Rush represented." - Thanks to Joe Pesch for the original article!
